About the Exhibition
Zooming Into Focus Contemporary Chinese Photography from the Haudenschild Collection is the first exhibition in a two-part series exploring the current art of China. The second exhibition, Contemporary Chinese Video from the Haudenschild Collection, will be presented at the University Art Gallery from 31 January through 21 April 2004.
Zooming Into Focus is organized and curated by Tina Yapelli, director of the University Art Gallery. The exhibitions are accompanied by a series of educational programs and artists’ residencies, presented in partnership with the San Diego Museum of Art; the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Mexico; the Shanghai Art Museum, China; the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou; El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Tijuana, Mexico; and the San Diego Chinese Historical Society and Museum. In conjunction with the exhibitions, the Haudenschild Collection commissioned new works by artists Shi Yong and Yang Zhenzhong that will premiere in San Diego.

Video Dialogue: Shanghai–Tijuana, moderated by Norma Iglesias, associate professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies, San Diego State University and researcher of Cultural Studies, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Tijuana, with presentations by Yang Zhenzhong and Tijuana artists Itzel Martinez (Yonkart), Giancarlo Ruiz and Salvador Vazquez Ricalde, noon to 2:00 PM, Centro Cultural Tijuana, Mexico; a reception will follow.

Presentation in Mandarin by Hou Hanru, 2:30 PM, Asian Garden, San Diego Chinese Historical Museum; a reception will follow until 4:00 PM.
